Staying in Touch from the UAE: The Licensed Route, and What a VPN Is Really For

Most of the UAE's population came from somewhere else, so the question of how to talk to family abroad is not a niche one. It is asked constantly, and it usually gets answered badly — by people with something to sell. Here is the straight version.

Calling over the internet is regulated in the UAE rather than left open. The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority licenses specific services to carry voice and video, and those services are available through the national operators. That is the route that keeps you inside the rules, and it is where to start if regular calls home are part of your life. Arrange it early, while nothing depends on it.

Why we are not going to sell you the workaround

The other answer is all over the forums: route the call somewhere else and the restriction goes away. We will not print it, and not out of squeamishness. Article 3 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 penalises using an IP address to access services one is not authorised to access, and the penalties are substantial. The person carrying that risk is the resident with a visa and a job here, not the site that recommended it. A calling minute is not worth that trade, and a company that tells you otherwise is telling you what sells rather than what is true.

What a VPN is actually for

Privacy on networks you do not control — which, in daily life here, is most of them. Free Wi-Fi is everywhere in the Emirates and it is very good: the airport, the mall, the hotel, the co-working floor. It is also shared with everyone else on it and visible to whoever runs it.

Encryption has closed the old hole. HTTPS means the message you send and the password you type are not readable by other people on the network. What remains readable is the shape of your activity: your device asks for each site by name before it can reach it, and the volume and timing of what follows are in plain view. Over a day that outlines your bank, your employer's systems, your clients and your hours.

A VPN puts the whole lot inside one encrypted tunnel to a server you pick. The café's router sees a single connection to a single address, and the outline disappears.

The limits, plainly

It protects traffic in transit and nothing beyond that — not a compromised phone, not a convincing phishing page, not an app designed to overshare. It does not make you anonymous: it moves the trust from your ISP to the VPN operator, which is why the no-logs policy is the claim worth checking. And it does not change what is permitted. It is a privacy tool, not a legal one.
