What Encryption Leaves Visible

The names of the sites you reach are still visible to the network, as are the size and timing of each exchange. A reading list assembles itself out of that: which journal, which archive, which forum, in which language, at which hours, for how long. So does a financial routine — the moment a banking app opens is a recognisable pattern even when the balance inside it is not.

For ordinary coursework that is only mildly uncomfortable. For a thesis on a subject you would rather discuss when it is finished, or for money moving between accounts on a network several thousand people share, the metadata is the sensitive part.
