A university network is one of the most heavily used connections a student in Iran will ever touch. It is free at the point of use, fast enough for coursework, and shared with several thousand other people at once. That combination is worth understanding before you settle in with it.

Who Is On the Network With You

Every shared network โ€” a faculty building in Tehran, a public library in Mashhad, a dormitory in Shiraz โ€” places your device alongside everyone else's on the same local segment, behind equipment the institution runs. End-to-end encryption protects the contents of what you send, and most sites and apps do encrypt now, which is a real improvement on how the web worked a decade ago.

What Encryption Leaves Visible

The names of the sites you reach are still visible to the network, as are the size and timing of each exchange. A reading list assembles itself out of that: which journal, which archive, which forum, in which language, at which hours, for how long. So does a financial routine โ€” the moment a banking app opens is a recognisable pattern even when the balance inside it is not.

For ordinary coursework that is only mildly uncomfortable. For a thesis on a subject you would rather discuss when it is finished, or for money moving between accounts on a network several thousand people share, the metadata is the sensitive part.

  • It does not protect what you publish. Anything posted under your own name is public regardless of how it travelled to get there.
