What Your Network Can See, and What Encryption Changes

Internet access in Iran is uneven. Speeds rise and fall through the day, connections drop and come back, and the network you are sitting on is rarely one you control โ€” a shared router in a building in Tehran, a neighbour's line, a mobile package you top up when it runs out. Most of the attention goes to speed. What gets less of it is the question of what the network in between can read.

What a Shared Network Sees

Any network you join puts your device on a local segment with other devices, and everything you send crosses equipment somebody else operates: the router in the building, the access point in a shop, the carrier's own systems. Whatever is not encrypted end to end is readable at those points. This has improved enormously โ€” most large sites and apps use HTTPS now, so the contents of what you send are protected while they travel.

What HTTPS Does Not Cover

HTTPS hides what you sent, not where you sent it. The name of every site your device looks up stays visible to the network, along with the size and timing of what you exchange with it. From that alone the shape of a session is clear: which service, for how long, how much data, at what hour, how often. For casual browsing that may not concern you. For someone moving money, delivering work to a client, or handling documents that are not theirs to leak, the pattern is worth more than any individual page.

What a Tunnel Changes

A VPN wraps everything your device sends inside a single encrypted connection to a server you choose. The local network sees one encrypted stream to one address and nothing about its contents โ€” not the site names, not the rhythm of it, not which apps you opened. Between your device and that server, the sequence of where you went stops being readable by whoever runs the network you happen to be on.

The Limits, Plainly

That is the whole of what it does, and it is worth being exact about what it does not:

  • It protects traffic in transit. A compromised phone, a password typed into a convincing fake login page, or an app that ships your data by design are all untouched by it.
  • It does not make you anonymous. It moves the trust rather than removing it: your provider no longer sees your traffic, and how the VPN operator handles it becomes the thing that matters. That is why the policy on logs is the claim to check.
  • It does not change what is permitted anywhere. A VPN is a privacy tool, not a legal one.
  • It cannot make a slow line fast. Routing through a distant server adds distance, and on a weak connection that can cost you speed rather than gain it.
