Campus, Hostel, Station: Shared Wi-Fi in India and What It Leaks
Students and commuters spend most of their online day on networks run by someone else. Here is what those networks can still see after HTTPS, what a VPN actually fixes, and where it stops.

If you are a student in India, or you commute, almost none of your internet comes from a connection you own. It is the campus SSID, the hostel router, the free Wi-Fi at the railway station, the library, a friend's hotspot. You move between four or five networks a day and you have never met the person running any of them.
What Those Networks Still See
The good news first: the sites and apps you use every day are almost all on HTTPS now, so what you type and read is encrypted between your device and the far end. Nobody on the hostel network is reading your messages out of the air.
The part that does not get said as often is that HTTPS hides the contents, not the destinations. Every time your device contacts a service it first looks up the name, and that lookup is plain to the network, as are the size and rhythm of what follows. A network operator does not need to read your email to build a decent picture of your day: which platforms you use, when you study, when you stop, who you keep going back to. On a campus network that log has a name attached to it, because you logged in with your roll number to get on it.
What a Tunnel Changes
A VPN puts everything your device sends inside one encrypted connection to a server you choose. The local network sees that one connection and nothing about its contents โ not the names, not the pattern. What used to be a readable list of destinations becomes a single opaque stream.
