Campus Wi-Fi, hostel connections, the free network at the library, the hotspot on a long train journey: for students and young professionals in India, almost all of the internet arrives over equipment somebody else administers. What they can see is the shape of it. Every site your device looks up is visible by name to the network. So is how much data moved and at what time. A hostel or campus administrator does not need to read your chats to know which messaging service you use at 2 am, which streaming service ate the bandwidth, that you spent an evening on a job portal, or that your device connected to a health provider's site on Tuesday. Metadata is not a technicality; over a term it is a diary.
