Public Wi-Fi in India: What the Network Learns While You Work
Station platforms, cafés, guest networks and hostels all hand out free connections. What actually leaks on them, why metadata is the underrated part, and where encryption stops helping.

Free Wi-Fi in India is everywhere worth sitting down: the café, the station platform, the mall food court, the office guest network, the hostel. It is genuinely useful. It is also, in most cases, a network you know nothing about, run by someone you will never meet, shared with everyone else in the room.
What an Open Network Actually Exposes
On shared Wi-Fi your device sits on the same local segment as every other device connected to it. The good news first: nearly every serious site and app uses HTTPS, so the contents — the message you typed, the password, the account balance on the screen — are encrypted and stay that way. The old picture of someone reading your email off the air is mostly out of date.
What is still exposed is the outline. The name of each site or service your device looks up is visible to the network and to whoever operates it, as is the size of what you download and the exact times you did it. A network operator does not need to read your mail to learn that you spent forty minutes on a recruitment site at lunch, or that you opened your bank's app twice from the same corner table.
Metadata Is the Part People Underrate
An end-to-end encrypted messenger protects what you say. It does not hide from the local network that your phone connected to a messaging service at 11:40 pm and again at midnight, or that a large file moved in one direction. Put a few weeks of that together and you have a fairly complete account of somebody's working life: which clients, which employer's systems, which bank, what hours. In an office or hostel network where the operator is also a landlord, an employer or a neighbour, that is not a hypothetical concern.

From the local network's point of view there is now one connection to one address, carrying traffic it cannot classify. Site names, app fingerprints and the daily rhythm of your browsing stop being readable by the café, the guest network or anyone else attached to it.

- It protects traffic in transit. A phone already carrying malware, a convincing fake login page, or an app that ships your contacts to its own servers are all untouched by it.
- It does not make you anonymous. Sites still know you when you sign in, and the trust simply moves: your ISP no longer sees the traffic, the operator of the tunnel now carries it.
- It does not change what is permitted. A VPN is lawful and unremarkable in India — it is standard issue in most corporate IT departments — but it is a privacy measure, not a permission slip.
